Coastal Erosion
The protection of the Dee
Coastline between Thurstaston and West Kirby is currently under review as part
of the Government’s Shoreline Management Plan SMP2.
The Society was horrified to discover that the medium and long term proposal for
this particular section of coast was to actually prevent landowners, e.g.
the Golf Club and residents from Shore Road, from protecting the cliffs from
erosion even if they wished to do so at their own expense.
There was a further consultation meeting with Wirral Council and local and national
government environmentalists at the Golf Club on January 14th 2010.
The meeting was very well organised with good opportunity for interested parties
including the Golf Club, Dee Sailing Club, The Caldy Society and Shore Road
residents to put their case forward for retention of the coastal defences on
Social, Environmental, Economic and Legal grounds.
We are pleased to report that common sense has
prevailed and the draft review now supports our wish to defend the coastline.
